Reminders for winter driving
By Cathy K
Winter Driving Skills It's time to recheck your prepareness for driving on Minnesota's roads. The number of fatal accidents this past weekend serve as a grim reminder that all drivers need to be alert. Temperatures As the temperatures hover around freezing, black ice is becoming more and more common particularly at sunset. Resurfaced highways are smooth and quickly cool causing invisible (black) ice to form from condensed moisture. Be vigilant and slow down. The life you save may be your own. Tires Your tires are your first line of defense in your vehicle. Be sure you check them regularly for good tread. As tires wear traction is compromised. Proper tire pressure is also extremely important. If you don't know what pressure you should use in your tires, check your auto owners manual or look for a sticker on the door with the information. If you don't have either, visit a competent tire store with experienced mechanics. They have access to all this information and will gladly help you. (By the way, if they don't treat you with respect, leave. You don't want to do business with them or send your friends there.) Which tires are steering my car? It seems silly to mention but front wheel drive and rear wheel drive cars handle differently. I have a front wheel drive car and an all wheel drive vehicle. I have to be mentally alert because each responds to ice and snow differently. And both are different from the rear wheel drive I learned to winter drive years ago. The number one tip I can give you is to remain ever alert for changing weather. Be safe this winter and may all of us reach our destinations safely. |
